The Economist, Aalto University Executive Education (Aalto EE) and Aalto University School of Business will present their views on our digitalized future, at the Digital Horizons summit to be held in Stockholm on 12–13 June.

This international top seminar will bring together digital technology pioneers and leading experts from Spotify, Microsoft, Google and Ericsson, among others. Furthermore, the impacts of digitalization on business, work and leadership will be discussed by Aalto EE and one of the world's most prestigious finance publications, The Economist.

Digitalization will drive social systems into a third major revolution, reshaping consumer behavior and the business serving it. In addition to new threats and creative destruction, this will open up unforeseen possibilities for innovation and new sources of competitive advantage.

According to Pekka Mattila, a panel member of Digital Horizons, Professor at Aalto University School of Business and Group Managing Director of Aalto EE, this change necessitates reconsidering all business management processes.

“Business management must understand the special characteristics of the digital, virtual and mobile operating environment, its challenges and strategic opportunities. Using technology to improve efficiency is no longer enough. This is a question of total transition, leaps ahead in business development and strategic renewal.”

Aalto University peruses digitalization from several viewpoints. Digital technology and its applications are widely developed and taught at the university. Digitalization is one of the themes cutting across Aalto University's various disciplines. When students and experts from different fields are brought together by courses, research projects and alongside businesses in the sector, new ideas and solutions are the result.

“Take AppCampus, for example. Jointly founded by Aalto University, Microsoft and Nokia, this development unit offers students, researchers and entrepreneurs the opportunity to create new mobile apps. Meanwhile, students on the doctoral course Bit Bang are investigating the impacts of the digital economy and technology on the future of the Internet and the development of the media world,” explains Erkki Ormala, Professor of Innovation Management.

“Experience has shown that the digital revolution is transforming traditional practices among businesses and universities. Open collaboration and interaction are the keys to discovering new solutions,” Ormala concludes.
