The ability to understand broad and complicated concepts, the readiness to operate in a multicultural environment, an entrepreneurial orientation, ethical choices, and group work and interactive skills are increasingly important skills in working life.
The content of the bachelor's degree programme in economics has been renewed in order to meet these needs. The programme beginning in autumn 2013 will develop students’ artistic skills in parallel with their knowledge.
- ’We’ll be focusing on our students' ability to grasp concepts and think critically, analytically and ethically. Our students will develop into entrepreneurial and responsible professionals who function constructively in the working environment and in groups, and they will have good skills to express themselves both in writing and orally,’ explains Professor Seppo Ikäheimo, who runs the bachelor’s programme in Helsinki.
- We’ll also make it possible to complete studies in other Aalto University schools and increase cross-disciplinary nature of studies in the field of business and economics.
Teaching methods emphasise small group teaching
With regard to knowledge, the programme will progress from broad-based and comprehensive examination of business sciences towards a single area of specialisation. The options include specialisations in management, marketing, communications, accounting, business law, finance, economics or business technology. Students will apply for their specialisation areas at the end of their first academic year. Full-time students will be able to complete a bachelor’s degree in three years.
Teaching methods will emphasise small group teaching and more efficient utilisation of teaching technology and electronic learning materials. The students who took part in planning the new Bachelor’s programme emphasised the importance of close co-operation between teachers and students.
Helsinki’s bachelor’s programme to Otaniemi in 2015
The next big step will be the transfer of Helsinki’s bachelor’s programme to Otaniemi in 2015.
- We’ve made content the priority when planning the facilities for bachelor-level teaching at Otaniemi. The facilities have to support participation and ensure that teachers and students can work in close contact. During planning, we have focused on the spaces for small group work enabling the diverse use of teaching technology.
The teaching language in the bachelor’s programme starting in autumn 2013 will be Finnish. The university’s other bachelor’s programme in economics is based in Mikkeli, where the teaching is conducted in English.
